AutoAct manages to support the many tasks included in professional car sales through an appealing and streamlined online tool. The thorough analysis of user needs and use of collaborative design tools helped make AutoAct the most used dealer tool in Germany.
Mjølner and eBay created an intuitive and appealing web application for professional car dealers. The reception on the market was extremely positive, as was the reaction from the eBay management. Today, the tool is used all over Germany.
eBay Inc. is an American multinational internet corporation. Founded in 1995, eBay is one of the notable success stories of the dot-com bubble. It is now a multi-billion dollar business with operations localized in over thirty countries.
European Release
With the AutoAct project, eBay wished to release the final product across Europe. This made the prospective user group very large and very diverse. Still, eBay wished for the tool to be truly intuitive and user-centered.
Because of this immense challenge, Mjølner was asked to facilitate the design process. An important challenge was to establish a set of requirements that could steer the design process.
This was achieved through a preliminary use domain study using observations, interviews, and workshops. Among other things, we carried out field studies at Danish and German dealers and facilitated a number of stakeholder interviews.

Fostering Collaboration with Strong Design Tools
The initial research phase led to the creation of a number of strong design tools, such as user scenarios, information architecture, workflows and wireframes, which helped consolidate and maintain the requirements.
The developing design ideas were continuously validated in collaboration with European stakeholders and developers. This ensured a very high quality that would match the business goals of the project.
Gradually, the creation of a graphical design was commenced in parallel with the general interaction design.
Design Guides and Logo
As no graphical guidelines of any sort existed, when the project started, the process included the development of a logo and the use of graphical mood boards and mock-ups to explore different paths for the overall design.
The final design suite proved very successful and was later used in other parts of the involved organizations.
Merging Technology and UX
The UX process was carried out in close collaboration with the technical development in order to ensure an efficient use of resources and the best possible overall quality of the final product.
To foster close and effective collaboration, several of Mjølner’s UX consultants and developers were stationed in eBay’s offices during the project. This helped maintain focus on the established requirements throughout the process.
AutoAct was launched in 2010 with amazing feedback from the car dealers. Today, it is the most used tool by German car dealers and the plan is to introduce the tool in new European countries within the coming years.
