In December 2012, Bilbasen presented Mjølner with a challenge. They needed help with the creation of their new iPad app, and they needed it fast. Easter is the time of the year where most used cars are sold and bought in Denmark, which made this a crucial deadline. The reception in the app store, and from eBay’s international organization, was overwhelming, proving the value of a strong and open partnership.

THE CHALLENGE

Bilbasen.dk is Denmark’s leading online marketplace for selling and buying used cars. In December 2012, Bilbasen presented Mjølner with a challenge. They needed help with the creation of their new iPad app, and they needed it fast. Easter is the time of the year where most used cars are sold and bought in Denmark, which made this a crucial deadline. eBay, the owner of Bilbasen, has a competent in-house iOS team, but time was short and their own resources were occupied with other important projects at the time.

Based on an existing iPhone app, Mjølner helped Bilbasen create an iPad app for purchase and sale of used cars. The reception in the app store, and from eBay’s international organization (Bilbasen is a part of eBay), was overwhelming, proving the value of a strong and open partnership.

The creation of Bilbasen’s iPad app followed Mjølner’s well-proven process. A core trait of this process is a very tight collaboration between developers and designers with a strong and mutual focus on customer and user needs.

The project offered a very specific design challenge: To create a stunning app for the iPad using the same structure as the existing iPhone app. This entailed exploiting the potential of the extra screen real estate through a focus on interaction design, as well as graphical design. The result was a simple, beautiful, and intuitive app. It offers a great browsing experience, while supporting sharing and saving the user’s favorite cars.

 

A VALUE-ADDING PARTNERSHIP

The partnership between eBay and Mjølner is a very close and effective one, encompassing both projects with Bilbasen and DBA. eBay is a very responsive partner who shares Mjølner’s focus on honoring deadlines and keeping the information flow high. This helps us stay agile, which is a key parameter in delivering a platform specific, high quality product, on time. Bilbasen’s iPad app is a great example of this.

Commercials for the app have been running on Danish national television, but the fruits of the eBay/Mjølner collaboration are also being noticed outside Danish borders. Every year eBay Motors holds a large international summit. This year the General Manager of eBay Denmark, Morten Heuing, brought the iPad app with him to the summit. The client

BilBasen.dk is a marketplace for the sale and purchase of all types of new and used cars, camper vans, vans, and buses. BilBasen has, in addition to regular advertisements, car sales and car sales, an auction where it is possible to sell their car to the highest bidder among over 2000 registered dealers. Every month, over 450,000 "Real Users" visit BilBasen.dk according to FDIM, the Association of Danish Interactive Media.
