An intuitive design aligned with Megger’s brand identity

The MFT-X1 is a very advanced multifunction tester for efficient and reliable testing of low voltage installations. The MFT-X1 is a significant upgrade from the previous industry leading MFT1700 series electricians’ testers. In addition to new design and operation, it adds user upgradable features as well as advanced data handling via the CertSuite mobile App.

Megger needed a design that conveys the quality and identity of the Megger brand and guides the user easily through the operation giving the user intuitive access to all the capabilities of the device. They asked Mjølner to contribute to the software development of this flagship product.

Prior to the project, Mjølner had already created a user interface concept on which the development of the MFT-X1 could build. The project plan rolled out by Mjølner ensured that the GUI design remained consistent with Megger’s visual identity through extensive reuse of existing assets.

“Working with Mjølner on our user interface development has been a very positive experience. They truly understood our vision and translated it into an intuitive, visually appealing design that perfectly aligns with our brand,” says Stephan Sommer, Managing Director at Megger.

Much more than a technical project

In addition to the software development for the specific instrument, it was agreed that Mjølner would also facilitate the modernization of Megger’s general software development process. Based on an initial project review Mjølner introduced the use of Scrum in a systematic and structured way. These initiatives immediately improved the visibility and understanding of the project’s status.

Systematic testing and continuous integration were introduced to enhance the development process. The time required to identify, analyze, and resolve defects was substantially reduced, which was essential for ensuring software quality and driving the project’s progress. Overall, the introduction of Scrum fostered closer collaboration and provided clearer definitions of project stages, enhancing each team’s understanding of the other’s needs and enabling early problem-solving.

“Mjølner really understands the business side and has taught us to be truly agile,” adds Stephan Sommer.

“We are very pleased with our long-term partnership with Mjølner. They understand our business and have not hesitated to challenge our workflows, thereby improving not only our products but also our processes. This makes Mjølner a valued partner whom we greatly trust.”

Strong project management in a complex context

During the project, software and hardware were developed in parallel. Mjølner managed a software team consisting of GUI developers from Mjølner and firmware developers from both Megger and Mjølner. The focus was on all areas of the product development, ranging from control software, firmware, middleware and UI development.

The project was executed by three sub-teams comprising a total of 18 developers from both Megger and Mjølner. The team members worked across the UK, Denmark, Israel, and Egypt, representing seven different nationalities. The teams worked in a context with many stakeholders which made clear and effective communication absolutely essential. Fortnightly meetings ensured alignment with the customer’s senior management.

“Mjølner’s handling of stakeholders was excellent. The project would not have achieved the same success without Mjølner’s expertise in project management,” states Stephan Sommer.

The MFT-X1 is an embedded device, meaning it contains a specialized computer system within the hardware to control or perform specific tasks. Access to and information about changes in the hardware were crucial for the software developers. Mjølner established structured and direct communication between the software teams and the hardware team, thereby mitigating delays and misunderstandings.

Long-term collaboration – Mjølner knows our business

The launch of the MFT-X1 was very well received by the market and reinforces Megger’s position as a leading supplier of equipment for electrical measurements. Over the past decade, Mjølner has completed several projects for Megger, resulting in a high level of domain knowledge.
