Motivating design improves user health
Working with LINAK, Mjølner created the LINAK Desk Control™. A desktop application, whose motivating design influences users to get the most out of the health benefits of their height adjustable tables, while also strengthening LINAK’s brand awareness.
With LINAK Desk Control™ users in the office can control their tables with a keyboard via a desktop application for both PC and Mac. The application guides and motivates the user to get the most out of their table’s height adjustment. The application is both simple and intuitive to use.

The challenge
LINAK is facing a challenge that many manufacturing companies face: When they deliver a simple component for a larger, composite product, their brand and identity disappears among the list of suppliers. An effective way to get yourself noticed is to create value creating software solutions that ineract with the end users.
“We wanted to create an application, that could improve the user’s health, while also underlining our own product. As a trusted partner, Mjølner was a natural part of this goal.”

LINAK is a market leading producer of electric, linear actuators with a global presence and is simultaneously one of Mjølner’s close partners. Before we started the work with LINAK Desk Control™, we worked with LINAK’s Medline & Careline division on developing intelligent touch panels for bedridden patients.
INFORMATION SUITED FOR THE INDIVIDUAL USER
LINAK Desk Control™ is a smaller desktop application that needs to be installed on the user’s work computer. With personal adjustments, the application calculates the number of minutes you need to stand each day, to achieve the wanted caloric burn or ergonomic gain.
Afterwards LINAK Desk Control™ informs you when you need to stand up, how close you are to your goal and when you need to sit down again, and so on.
“Software developers, User Experience consultants and digital designers all ran into a challenge here. The project demanded important decisions on many levels, and Mjølner’s ability to cooperate across several technical disciplines was critical for that reason.”
Mikkel Yde Kjær, FormerMobile Manager, Mjølner Informatics
MOTIVATION OR ANNOYANCE?
In our work on developing LINAK Desk Control™, two particular considerations became clear:
- As we’re working on affecting people’s health, it’s particularly important that the application’s calculations are precise. LINAK’s own researchers developed a complex formula for this purpose.
- How do we develop a user interface that encourages users to incorporate physical activity in their work day without causing undue annoyance.
“We wanted to help end users achieve a more active work day and improve their life quality, while also making our values clear to them. To find the right tone in the design of this application was key.”
Bjarke Thomsen, SBU Sales Manager, LINAK
