Continuous Development and Optimization Backed by Mjølner’s Microsoft Expertise

In the partnership between DGI and Mjølner, continuous development and optimization are more than just words. They are priorities supported by a structured approach. DGI also benefits from Mjølner’s expertise and Microsoft partner status, which provide access to Microsoft funding opportunities and technically sound advice on Microsoft Cloud solutions.

Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware in late 2023 had a significant impact on DGI’s data center setup. Substantial increases in licensing costs and the unexpected announcement that its hardware platform would reach end of life (EOL) forced DGI to migrate its entire data center infrastructure from on-premises to Microsoft Azure within a tight and non-negotiable deadline.

“We were facing an investment of DKK 4–5 million several years earlier than expected, and that simply wasn’t feasible for us,”

explains Allan Jensen, Head of Digital Infrastructure & Security at DGI.

Microsoft Funding Through Mjølner

One way to ease the financial burden was to apply for funding from Microsoft.

Microsoft offers several funding programs that allow qualified Microsoft partners to apply for financial support, for example to carry out a Proof of Concept (PoC). This requires the partner to have the experience and expertise needed to assess whether the customer and project qualify for a particular program.

“Mjølner assessed that we were eligible to apply for Microsoft funding for a PoC. They have a dedicated team specializing in Microsoft funding opportunities. They handled the entire process and submitted the application on our behalf,”

says Allan Jensen.

“Through Mjølner, we secured Microsoft funding for the analysis phase. This gave us significant resources to work with, both in terms of licensing and consulting hours. And because DGI is an NGO, the total funding was higher than it would have been for a commercial company.”

Proof of Concept Supported by Significant Microsoft Funding

During the analysis and migration to Azure, Microsoft contributed DKK 350,000 to the analysis phase.

“Mjølner demonstrated five different products to us, and we decided to proceed with two of them. If we had investigated the options ourselves, it would have been a process of trial and error, and we would have had to purchase consulting hours from Mjølner. We weren’t even aware that these products existed,”

“Instead, we could get straight to work. Mjølner showed us the products, explained their capabilities, what we could expect, and assured us that they could manage them afterwards. Had we done it ourselves, it would have cost twice as much.”

explains Allan Jensen.

Technically Sound Advice

Allan Jensen emphasizes that Microsoft funding offers more than just financial support.

“When we receive Microsoft funding through Mjølner, it also gives us confidence that we’re receiving technically sound advice. Microsoft stands behind the technical qualifications of its partners,” explains Allan Jensen.

“For example, Mjølner ran a workshop where they had already configured everything in Azure and demonstrated how the product would work in a live environment. We gained a complete understanding of the product, what it would cost to operate, and what would be required. Everything was completely transparent, and we came away with a clear, concrete outcome.”

“Our only investment in the workshop was our own time. We didn’t have to pay anything upfront. Afterwards, we could simply have decided not to proceed and discarded the whole thing – but we didn’t,”

Allan Jensen adds with a smile.

A Structured Approach to Continuous Development and Optimization

In addition to workshops, which are generally held at six-month intervals, Allan Jensen also highlights the monthly meetings with Mjølner.

These meetings are not just about reporting on the operational service agreement. They also provide an opportunity to discuss continuous optimization and development.

“At our monthly meetings, we have a standing agenda item: Mjølner tells us if there’s something new and interesting we should look into, or we bring ideas to them and ask whether they might be relevant for us. Mjølner always brings the right team, depending on what we need to explore, whether it’s something big or small,” explains Allan Jensen.

“We make a point of meeting with the Mjølner team that handles our day-to-day operations. There’s real value in sitting down together face to face. In our partnership, Mjølner functions like an employee we could just as well have hired ourselves – except there are five of them.”

“We really value our monthly meetings and always make them a social occasion as well. We could probably get through everything in an hour and a half, but instead we set aside an entire morning, take turns hosting the meetings, and always finish with lunch together,”

concludes Allan Jensen.
