PATIENT INVOLVEMENT AND INTERACTIVE SCREENS

When the Danish Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases was approaching a move to new, modern premises in Sønderborg, they had the ambition that it would not just be the premises that were groundbreaking.

Thomas Hoffmann, head of IT in The Danish Rheumatism Association, explains that the high level of ambition was a part of the process from the beginning:

“We wanted a solution that contributed to making the patient the center of their own treatment course. It should allow the patient to be involved more closely and more systematically, e.g. through reporting own data and accessing own health information directly from the medical file.”

He adds, “We had the ambition that the medical professional going on clinical rounds would be able to use the screens for showing scans and drawing and writing notes on them. That way we could increase the patient’s understanding and overview of the course. The same applies for physiotherapists, who need to be able to draw things as part of explaining exercises.”

Hoffmann is describing the AV solution that is currently installed in 26 patient rooms and 8 conference rooms at the new Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases. The solution contains an application made by Mjølner which allows the patients to interact with the screen in their room by touch.

“We are very happy with the process and the result, which is very close to our initial ambitions for the solution.”

PERSONALIZED EXERCISE PROGRAM AND GAMES THAT INTICE MOVEMENT

One of the senior software architects at Mjølner has created the gateway application that enables adding elements to the touch screen, so that the content on each individual screen can be controlled centrally – e.g. by the administration at the Danish Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases.

Mjølner has incorporated various functions in the application which provide the rheumatism patient with a more personalized and interactive hospitalization course.

“Mjølner is a reliable, thoroughly professional, and highly innovative software partner. The collaboration on Digital Patient Room has been rewarding, informative, and has one hundred percent lived up to our expectations. I found Mjølner completely unique in its focus on the user as the center, its technical skills, and the ambitions of the business.”

A daily schedule shows the day-to-day activities for the individual patient at the Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases. The application also contains healthcare podcasts, pain assessment, a digital onboarding program, reading aloud for the visually impaired through Google Cloud Speech API, television channels and games, and casting technology so the patients can cast for instance Netflix from their smartphones. Furthermore, the staff can connect their computers to the screens and thereby digitally show and tell when they visit a patient to inform them about the treatment plan. There is also a box with a satisfaction survey, which the patients are asked to complete at the end of their stay, and naturally this can be done directly on the screen.

By design, the application does not have a remote control. So, it is a touch screen that the solution attempts to lure the patients out of bed with. You must physically move to the screen to interact with it.

“The project with The Danish Rheumatism Association has been highly interesting and innovative. It is always a pleasure when our clients want to lead the way in the digitalization of their branch of industry. We are quite proud of the application which is now being used in the AV solutions at the Danish Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases for the benefit of the patients, who now receive a more personalized and involving hospitalization course.”
