A complete makeover of the VELUX remote control
For several years, VELUX has produced a remote control for their products. Although customers were able to use the basic functionality, only very few managed to take full advantage of the functionality offered in the remotes.
VELUX and Mjølner carried out a complete makeover of the VELUX remote control, where they turned the existing product into a sleek and innovative control pad to be used by customers across the world.

VELUX and Mjølner carried out a complete makeover of the VELUX remote control, where they turned the existing product into a sleek and innovative control pad to be used by customers across the world.
Mjølner was asked to carry out a user-centered design process with a vision of creating a device that would meet the high expectations of their diverse customer base. The process comprized a series of activities across Europe. This included focus groups, field studies in the homes of customers, online desirability surveys, and usability tests of prototypes.
During this process, Mjølner iteratively created and improved sketches, wireframes, graphical mock-ups, and prototypes in accordance with the established requirements based on the needs of users and VELUX stakeholders. These efforts ensured that the functionality offered in the final VELUX remote control matched the needs of the key users and use scenarios.
The design and development of the new VELUX remote control was carried out in collaboration with a wide array of Velux stakeholders, ranging from marketing, communication, and manual writers to product owners, developers, and engineers. This comprehensive cooperation ensured that the many interfaces of the home control aligned with the overall strategy of the VELUX Group.
To optimize communication between the many and very different stakeholders involved, Mjølner created a set of design tools, such as user profiles, prototypes, and a front-end specification. These served to anchor discussions in a way which made the addressed problems more tangible to the involved actors. In collaboration with VELUX, the design tools were integrated in the technical specification and in the work of Mjølner’s developers, helping them implement the graphical user interface with great attention to detail.
The VELUX Group is known to be an innovative company dedicated to improve living environments with daylight and fresh air through the roof. VELUX offers a wide range of roof windows and skylights. It also supplies original components to partners who work in the field of roof window sun screening.
